about the program
Our Welding 1 program will give you hands-on experience in key welding processes, including gas metal arc welding, thermal cutting processes, shielded metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and oxy fuel cutting and welding. We offer both full-time and part-time classes to fit into your schedule.
The program focuses on developing critical welding skills, equipment setup, safety and basic welding metallurgy. You will also gain skills in types of metal, cutting and fabrication tools, welding positions, welding applications, and inspection and testing.

Academic Preparedness:
- English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
- Understanding of basic algebra.
- Stand for long periods of time.
- Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, parts, or controls.Â
- Ability to perform safely in the shop.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds to eye level.
- See details of objects that are more than a few feet away and differentiate between colors, shades and brightnesses.
- Communicate effectively with instructor(s), classmates, and clients.
- Have the dexterity to weld in a variety of positions.Â
- Perform repetitive movements that may include, but are not limited to bending, twisting, stretching, or reaching out.Â
- Maintain or regain balance to stay upright when in an unstable position.Â
- Ability to jump, sprint, or throw objects.Â
- Wear PPE equipment including, but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, helmets, face shields, body coverings, and boots.Â
- Capable of sustained activity for 5 hours at a time.

- There is a Mandatory Orientation for this program.Â
- The program is delivered at a quick pace, without breaks between classes. One class is covered in its entirety before moving to the next class and ranges from one to four weeks.Â
- Our programs welcome new students multiple times throughout the year. As a student, you will likely experience being in the classroom with another cohort that may be learning different content than you
- Technical tours and technician ride-along experiences are part of the program. Please discuss accessibility needs with your Navigator before class.
- Due to the delivery, this program will require computer use and internet access. If you need assistance obtaining technology, please contact student.success@emilygriffith.edu.
- Assignments completed virtually will be done using our learning system, Moodle. You will not be able to access Moodle until you have paid for your classes.

- Author: Althouse, Turnquist, Bowditch, Bowditch, Bowditch
- ISBN #: 978-1635636864
- Be prepared to purchase supplies such as:
- ANSI-approved 8-inch high steel toe leather work boots, those without laces or with lace guards are recommended.
- Cotton pants – Jeans are acceptable with no holes or frays.
- College-ruled spiral notebook with pen.
- Combination lock or lock with key.
- The required textbook for class.
You must follow all school policies for in-person and virtual learning at all times.
The Code of Conduct and other program policies will be reviewed in class.
The Student Success Center provides you access to services such as tutoring, disability support services, health and wellness resources, and classroom support.
- You are not allowed to miss more than 30% of the course hours; if you miss more than 10% of the course hours a referral will be made to your Student Success Coordinator.
- This resets at each course throughout the program and this includes arriving late and leaving early
- Tardiness for over 30 minutes without notification may result in being sent home
- Multiple absences or tardies will result in a failing grade and removal from the program
- Missed hours cannot be made-up. You will need to re-enroll in a future cohort.
- Enrollment in future cohorts is dependent on pending space and availability.
- Student IDs must be worn at all times while on school property and during any off-campus school activities.
- Proper Personal Protective gear must be worn at all times, this includes boots, safety goggles, and proper work attire.
- Pants must be worn at the waist (no sagging pants).
- Sunglasses are not to be worn during school hours, unless outside.
- Odors from smoke, excessive perspiration, perfume, or other sources are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Odors can be disruptive and even cause physical symptoms to clients and other students.
- Students not following the dress code will be asked to change or leave. Being asked to leave will count as missed time.
