about the program
We are excited to offer this brand-new Woodworking course to the Denver community! This course provides a comprehensive foundation in woodworking, blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills in design, construction, and finishing. Woodworking will cover a range of topics:
- Basic tool use
- Woodworking machines
- Woodworking techniques
- Woodworking safety
- Woodworking knowledge
- Project visualization
- Finishing
- Orientation to Shop and Design: Introduction to workshop setup, safety procedures, and basic design principles.
- History of Furniture: Overview of furniture design evolution, styles, and significant historical periods.
- Building Process: Steps involved in constructing furniture from initial concept to final product.
- Design Process: Finding inspiration, creating preliminary designs, and converting ideas into detailed plans.
- Understanding Wood: Basics of lumber, including types of wood, grain patterns, and the effects of movement, grain, strength, and weight on design.
- Lumber Preparation: Cutting, drying, and purchasing lumber, including preparation prior to milling and grain selection for aesthetic purposes.
- Milling and Tool Use: Techniques for milling lumber, including jointing, planning, and using various saws (chop saw, table saw) and measurement tools.
- Joinery Techniques: Instruction on various joinery methods such as butt joints, miters, rabbet, dado, lap joints, and mortise & tenons. Introduction to tenoning jigs and routers.
- Project Construction: Techniques for assembling projects, including sanding (both manual and machine), and selecting and applying glue.
- Finishing Projects: Methods for coloring wood, choosing and applying finishes, and finalizing the look of completed projects.
