Credits and Transfers

Credit by Examination or Test Out

Students may receive Credit by Examination by taking a comprehensive examination that demonstrates competence equivalent to learning achieved in a course offered by a college. See department advisor for list of classes. Once a student enters a class, he/she may not take a challenge test for that class. Students may take an exam only one time for each course. See procedures below.

Prior Learning Credit

Prior learning credit may be earned for a maximum of 15 credits. See procedures below.

Earn your Associate's Degree

Credits from our technical courses are transferable to other Colorado public community colleges. See procedures below.

Transfer to Technical College

Students may transfer credit(s) from other college(s) to Emily Griffith Technical College by requesting an official transcript from previous college(s). See procedures below.

A Note About Audits

Auditing a course allows a a student to take a class without the benefit of a grade or credit for a course, Emily Griffith Technical College does not offer this option to students.

Challenge Test Procedure

Challenge Examination for Prerequisite Class/es Procedure:

  • Meet with department advisor
  • Complete request for examination application form
  • Request from advisor a time to test that fits with department scheduling
  • Pay $25 to take challenge test for prerequisite class(es)
  • Take test - grade is either pass or fail
  • A pass does not factor into GPA
  • Receive test score from department advisor
  • Prerequisite classes are not placed on student transcript
  • Challenge examinations from other schools are not accepted
  • If a student does not pass test, he/she must take course at full cost. No amount of money from the test-out will apply to actually taking the class.

    • Cost is half the price of class. If students do not pass the challenge test, they must take course at full cost.

Prior Learning Credit

Prior Learning Credit

Prior learning credit may be earned for a maximum of 15 credits by documentation of the following:

College-level learning that entails knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of prior learning experiences such as:

  • Work or life learning
  • Correspondence and extension courses
  • Individual study and reading
  • Community and volunteer work
  • Participation in informal course and in-service training sponsored by associations, business, industry, and government.

Application Procedure for Prior Learning Credit:

  • Be enrolled in other classes
  • Meet with department advisor
  • Complete request for prior learning credit form
  • Pay for cost of class in Treasurer's Office. Cost is calculated at 50% of cost per credit hour.
  • Meet with appropriate instructor for guidelines
  • Complete project/portfolio
  • Request project/portfolio to be graded by instructor
  • See student records for pass/fail to be put on transcript

This form is required for all students transferring from a program within Emily Griffith Technical College. This includes if you were in an undeclared program. If you are seeking approval from transfer of continuing education to certificate seeking, you must apply for admission.

Transferring Out Credits

Earn your Associate's Degree

Credits from our technical courses are transferable to other Colorado public community colleges. Starting your education at Emily Griffith Technical College can be the easiest and most cost-effective way to start earning your Associate's Degree (AAs).

  • Credit transfers to any of the Colorado public community/junior colleges including the six metro area community colleges - Aims, Arapahoe, Front Range, Red Rocks, Aurora, and Denver.
  • Up to 45 semester credits of a state approved Emily Griffith career/technical program may be credited to the community college's AAS Degree in Applied Technology.
  • The student must complete at least 15-18 hours of academic courses at the community college.

Transferring in Credits

Transfer to Technical College

Students may transfer credit(s) from other college(s) to Emily Griffith Technical College by requesting an official transcript from previous college(s).

  • Emily Griffith will accept transfer credit from postsecondary institutions that are accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations: Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
  • Transfer credits may also be accepted from Community Colleges of Colorado-approved institutions for credits that are applicable to a certificate program and meet the certificate requirements in comparable or equivalent EGTC program(s).
  • Credits must be earned in the previous five to ten calendar years. (See program manager for special circumstances.)
  • One-third of the credit hours in a program need to be completed at Emily Griffith Technical College.

Transferring in Procedure :

  1. Request official transcript(s) from previous school(s).
    • Issuing institutions should address transcripts to EGTC Student Records, 1860 Lincoln Street, Denver, CO 80203. Documents become the property of the school and will not be released to the student or transferred to other institutions.
    • Transcripts from international institutions must be submitted in the native language along with certified English translations.
  2. Complete Transfer of Credit Application form.
  3. Meet with your Advisor
    • Before entering class or program, meet with appropriate department advisor who will evaluate transcript(s) to determine how accepted transfer credits will apply to intended program.
    • Evaluation of transcript(s) may take up to two weeks.
  4. Register for class
    • Register for class(es) that is/are different from the ones that you would like to be evaluated.
  5. Emily Griffith reserves the right to evaluate all credits according to its admissions and registration policies.
